Yesterday, the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service recalled about 9 million pounds of meat. This meat, “came from ‘diseased and unsound’ animals that weren’t properly inspected.” One can only imagine what “unsound” could mean in this context because of course the USDA doesn’t give a concrete definition. As the article states, there have been no reported illnesses linked to this recall. This recall was an expansion from one on January 13, 2014 that only recalled 40,000 pounds. The products affected from this ban were shipped between January 1 and January 7. It is scary to think that for a month, uninspected, contaminated meat could have been circulating through the markets and our kitchens without anyone noticing.
